There’s a particular kind of magic that settles over the log yard when a truly special home begins to rise, the kind of project where the timber itself carries centuries of history, strength, and quiet grandeur.
That’s exactly what’s unfolding right now at Cascade Handcrafted, where our team is building a remarkable piece‑en‑piece log home from Yellow Cedar trees, botanical name “Callitropsis nootkatensi” that have stood for 300 to 500 years.
Each log shows the slow, steady growth that makes this wood so special. When you look at the grain, you can see how tight and dense the rings are. They are much denser than the rings in Western Red Cedar, and that density gives the wood extra strength and stability.
A Harder, Stronger Timber
Yellow Cedar is also a harder wood than Western Red Cedar. You feel it right away when you start shaping the logs and with the sawmill. The timber is heavier, tougher, and more solid under the tools. Its strength is closer to Douglas Fir, which is known for its durability in major structural work. But Yellow Cedar also has natural oils that help protect it from insects and decay, making it a great choice for long‑lasting homes in our coastal climate.
Crafting With the Piece‑en‑Piece Method
This home is being built using the piece‑en‑piece method. This style uses vertical posts and horizontal infill pieces that fit together with clean, precise joints. It creates a classic look with strong lines and a warm, handcrafted feel. It also allows for more design flexibility, which makes each home unique.
Massive Timbers and Skilled Hands
The scale of the logs in this project is impressive. Some of the posts weigh between 400 and 500 pounds. Many of them are cut from 18 x 18‑inch Yellow Cedar timbers. Moving and setting these huge pieces takes planning, teamwork, and a lot of skill. Every log is shaped by hand. Every joint is fitted with care. And every step shows the experience of the builders who work with this material every day.
Watching the Structure Rise
Watching the home rise in the yard is exciting. The big posts stand tall and solid. The horizontal pieces slide into place with a tight, clean fit. The structure grows one section at a time, and with each new piece, you can see the final shape becoming clearer.
A Home Built to Last for Generations
A home built from Yellow Cedar of this age and quality is made to last. The dense grain helps the logs stay stable over time. The hardness of the wood adds long‑term strength. And the natural resistance of Yellow Cedar helps protect the home from moisture and insects. It’s a material that performs well in every season and holds its beauty for decades.
More to Come as the Build Continues
When this home is finished, it will offer warmth, strength, and a timeless look that only handcrafted log work can provide. For now, it’s still in the early stages, rising in the log yard one heavy timber at a time. We’re excited to share more photos and updates as this remarkable project continues to grow.
